How to change or customize your target location(s) on Google Ads
Contrary to common belief, Google products are not absolutely perfect. In regards to area targeting, there are a few holes. Most area names are in their database and can be targeted by name, however, some areas are missing and must therefore be targeted via radius (see targeting option 2). As well, it is important to note that as of Fall 2020, Google Ads does no longer accept targeting based on postal codes for real estate related ads due to its new anti-discrimination policies.
There are two ways to modify, add or remove locations on Google Ads. We recommend taking a look at both:
Option 1) Select a campaign and on the left-hand side of the platform, click on Settings.
Next, click on the Locations tab, and add locations you would like to advertise into the “Targeted locations” box. If you would like to exclude a location (an extra precaution to make sure your ad does not appear in a certain location) add the location to the “Excluded locations” box.
In this section, you can also change your Location options. Select the dropdown menu with this name and select the options in the image displayed below. These are the settings we recommend keeping all your campaigns on.
Option 2) This way allows you to further customize. Once you’ve selected a campaign, click the Locations tab on the left-hand side, just below Settings.
Next click on the blue pencil button to edit the locations. You will now have the option to select location(s) to target or radius.
Google Ads only allows you to target main locations by their name, for more granular areas, or for a personalized area, you can create radiuses. The size is up to you and can be done in kilometers or miles.
